Type J emerged from the Paris atelier of De Dion–Bouton during the belle-époque dawn of motoring, adding one more chapter to the marque that dominated early European car production.
Background
De Dion–Bouton rose to prominence in the 1890s with tricycles and voiturettes powered by the firm’s own single- and twin-cylinder engines. While details on the Type J are scarce, it stands as another example of the company’s rapid model turnover aimed at a market hungry for any gasoline carriage.
Technical profile
Although specifications for the Type J have not survived in full, period De Dion–Bouton cars typically used lightweight tubular frames, chain or belt final drive, and proprietary engines displacing under 1.0 L. Cooling was by thermosiphon, ignition by trembler coil—state-of-the-art for 1900–1910.
Legacy
Today only fragmentary records and the occasional brass-era photograph hint at the Type J’s existence. Still, its name is catalogued in marque registers and club archives worldwide, underscoring how even the lesser-known De Dion–Bouton variants contributed to the firm’s outsized pre-war reputation.
