Origins
De Dion-Bouton began as a steam-powered-vehicle builder in 1883 and quickly transitioned to internal-combustion automobiles. The Type AD emerged in the brand’s first decade of car production, placing the company at the forefront of Europe’s nascent automotive industry.
Design
Little detailed archival data survives on the precise layout of the Type AD, but period illustrations show a light, two-seat runabout riding on spoked artillery wheels. Like its stablemates, the car used De Dion-Bouton’s own single-cylinder engines, celebrated for compact size and reliable low-speed torque.
Legacy
In pushing gasoline-powered vehicles from bespoke curiosities toward series production, the Type AD and its contemporaries set the template for small French voiturettes. Surviving examples are prized by early-auto museums, underlining De Dion-Bouton’s crucial role in transforming 19th-century transport.
