Launched near the turn of the 20th century, the De Dion-Bouton Type ID represents one of the earliest examples of standardized automotive engineering from the French pioneer De Dion–Bouton, a company that helped define the first motorized era.
Origins
De Dion–Bouton entered automobile production in the 1890s, moving from steam experiments to reliable petrol cars faster than most rivals. The Type ID appeared as production grew beyond prototypes, using the firm’s proven single-cylinder engines and innovative driveline layouts.
Engineering
While granular specifications are scarce, period records show the Type ID carried forward De Dion–Bouton’s trademark rear-mounted engine with shaft drive, replacing belts and chains with a quieter, cleaner transmission. Light tubular frames and tiller steering kept overall weight low, aligning with the era’s preference for minimalism over power.
Legacy
Despite fragmentary archives, the Type ID’s lineage underscores De Dion–Bouton’s worldwide influence: every continent soon hosted coachbuilders adapting similar chassis for taxis, delivery vans, and private runabouts, cementing the brand as Europe’s first truly mass-market car manufacturer.
