De Dion-Bouton Type DI was a car model offered by the pioneering French firm De Dion–Bouton, one of the earliest companies to put reliable automobiles on the road. Though detailed specifications and exact production years are scant, the DI forms part of a lineage that set early 20th-century automotive standards.
History
De Dion–Bouton emerged in the 1880s as a trail-blazing force in automotive engineering, moving from steam tractors to gasoline cars by the late 1890s. The Type DI appeared within this first wave of mass-market De Dion-Bouton models that helped define France as the birthplace of the modern motorcar.
Legacy
Records of production numbers and technical data for the Type DI are limited today, yet its parent company’s influence is clear: De Dion-Bouton innovations such as the single-cylinder engine with mechanically operated valves, shaft drive, and multi-speed gearboxes were carried through many subsequent models and copied worldwide. The DI is remembered as an early expression of these breakthroughs.
