History
Little survives in the record about the precise launch year or production numbers of the Type DH; all that is certain is that it was sold by De Dion–Bouton during the first decade of the 1900s, a period when the French firm was the world’s largest manufacturer of automobiles. The model’s very name—itself just an internal factory designation—hints at an experimental or short-run vehicle among the company’s prolific output.
Design & Engineering
Like most contemporary De Dion–Boutons, the Type DH almost certainly relied on a single- or twin-cylinder engine mounted beneath a lightweight chassis, coupled to the company’s own sliding-pinion gearbox. Brass lamps, carriage-style coachwork and solid rubber tyres would have completed the typical period look, while the marque’s reputation for reliability meant the car was aimed at well-heeled doctors and merchants rather than daring racers.
