The Type CL is a little-remembered model from De Dion–Bouton, the French marque that dominated early automotive and motorcycle production. Few archival details survive, making it a rare footnote in the company’s prolific 1890-1920s era.
Context
De Dion–Bouton was one of the world’s largest automobile manufacturers around the turn of the 20th century, known for single-cylinder engines and voiturette layouts. Model nomenclatures such as Type A, Type F and Type CL were used to distinguish incremental chassis and engine variations created before standardized naming took hold.
Rarity
No factory ledgers, period road-tests, or surviving advertising sheets specifically describing the Type CL have yet surfaced in major archives. As a result, production quantities, exact years and technical specifications remain undocumented.
Legacy
Because so little is recorded, the Type CL serves collectors and historians primarily as a reminder of how quickly early automotive records disappeared. Vehicles definitively identified with Type CL stamps are today confined to a handful of European museum holdings.
