Nissan launched the first Datsun-branded pickups in 1955, targeting small businesses and rural drivers who needed utility without the bulk of full-size American trucks. The series evolved through multiple chassis updates, adopting coil-front suspensions and wider cabs during the 1970s. In 1983, coinciding with the company’s global rebranding strategy, the grille badges flipped from Datsun to Nissan while mechanical continuity ensured parts interchangeability.
Generations and Variants
Spanning nearly five decades, the model appeared in short-, long-, and king-cab bodies, with payload ratings ranging from half-ton to one-ton depending on market. Export versions wore model numbers like 620, 720 and D21, while domestic Japanese buyers could still choose stripped-down workhorses sold exclusively through Nissan Bluebird Store dealerships.
Legacy
When production ceased in 1997, the line was succeeded by the Frontier/Navara twins, yet surplus Datsun Trucks remain in daily service across Asia, Africa and Latin America. Their simple inline-four engines and ladder-frame chassis created a global spare-parts ecosystem that helps keep second- and third-hand vehicles on the road decades after their intended retirement.
