Produced only from 1946 through 1948, the Chevrolet Stylemaster was Chevrolet’s immediate post-war mid-size offering, bridging the gap between pre-war austerity and the full-size boom that followed. It rolled out of American factories just as the nation was shifting from wartime production back to civilian motoring.
History
After suspending passenger-car production during World War II, Chevrolet retooled and launched the 1946 model year with the Stylemaster replacing the pre-war Chevrolet Master. Sold for three short years—1946, 1947 and 1948—the model served as an interim solution while engineers prepared more modern replacements that would emerge in 1949.
Design & Dimensions
The Stylemaster retained the upright, slab-sided styling typical of mid-1940s American sedans, riding on the established GM A-body architecture. Measured at 5,023 mm long, it positioned itself neatly between compact and full-size categories by the standards of the day, offering six-passenger seating in a two- or four-door sedan layout.
Legacy
The brief production run makes the Stylemaster a rare post-war artifact today. Its successor, the Chevrolet 150 introduced in 1953, would adopt cleaner lines and an all-new chassis. Yet the Stylemaster represents the first wave of cars that brought Americans back to the road after rationing and wartime austerity.
