Chevrolet Standard Six

Slotting below the premium models of its day, the Chevrolet Standard was introduced for 1933 to give Depression-era buyers an affordable way into a six-cylinder closed car. Positioned beneath the renamed Master line, it cemented Chevrolet’s strategy of covering both budget and mid-price markets.
Launch & Positioning
Debuting as the Standard Mercury in 1933, the car immediately replaced the outgoing Series BA Confederate while costing noticeably less than the newly re-christened Master Eagle (later simply Master). Chevrolet marketed it squarely as the least expensive enclosed six-cylinder car on the U.S. market, a claim meant to sway buyers who needed practicality and smooth engine manners at a bargain price.
Design Differences
Visual distinction came from a simpler grille and fewer brightwork touches compared with the more upscale Master. The Standard rode a shorter wheelbase and offered closed sedan, coupe and coach bodies—all trimmed with cost-saving upholstery and hardware—while still delivering the brand-typical wooden artillery wheels and full-fender styling of the era.
Short Model Span
After only a two-year run, the Standard was replaced for 1935 by the expanded Chevrolet Master line, which absorbed its price point and left no direct successor. Short though it was, the Standard helped Chevrolet maintain sales momentum during the worst of the Great Depression.
