Produced for just three model years, the Chevrolet Parkwood was Chevy’s mid-tier full-size wagon from 1959 to 1961, slotting neatly between value-focused Brookwoods and premium Nomads in a market hungry for family space and style.
History and Positioning
The Parkwood debuted alongside the restyled 1959 Chevrolet line-up, riding the brand’s dramatic new bat-fin bodywork. It inherited its name from the Bel Air passenger series, and like other 1959–1961 wagons it rode on the longer 119-inch wheelbase shared with full-size Chevrolets.
Distinctive Design Touches
Parkwoods carried Bel-Air-level brightwork: full-length side spears, distinctive two-tone paint separating panels, and chromed egg-crate grilles. A sweeping wraparound windshield and those famous soaring rear fins helped late-fifties families stand out at the grocery store—and in period advertising campaigns.
Practical Specs and Variants
Length measured 5 320 mm (209.4 in), stretching to accommodate six- or nine-passenger seating with the hallmark clamshell tailgate. Engine choices mirrored the Bel Air range, starting with the 235-cu-in six and running through 283-cu-in and 348-cu-in V-8s for buyers needing tow-ready torque.
Short-lived Legacy
After 1961, Chevrolet retired the Parkwood name along with the aspirational Nomad; the entire wagon range was reorganized under the Townsman, Kingswood, and Nomad Custom labels. Clean survivors remain favorites among ’50s wagon enthusiasts drawn to their rare three-year only status.
