History
Introduced for the 1996 model year as the direct successor to the Chevrolet Van/G-series, the Express arrived just as demand for versatile, heavy-duty vans was accelerating nationwide. While Ford’s E-Series had already carved out market share, GM positioned the Express with modern powertrains and stiffer body-on-frame construction. Minimal sheet-metal changes since launch reflect its focus on durability over flashy redesigns, letting the van age into a familiar sight on job sites and school routes alike.
Design & Configurations
Two primary body styles define the Express range: the enclosed passenger and cargo van with either standard or extended wheelbase, and a cutaway chassis that loses the rear bodywork to accept aftermarket upfits. The cutaway adapts readily to ambulances, small buses, Class C RVs, and box trucks, thanks to dual rear wheels and rated payload allowances on the heavier-duty 3500 and 4500 series frames.
Variants & Applications
