Chevrolet pulled the covers off the Corvette C6 for the 2005 model year, delivering a sharper, faster evolution of the two-seat sports-car formula. Eight seasons of production produced track-ready Z06, ZR1 and Grand Sport variants plus proven endurance racers.
Design & Launch
The C6 ushered in the first exposed quad headlamps on a Corvette since 1962, signaling a cleaner, more aggressive look while shrinking overall length by 127 mm yet adding 64 mm in wheelbase. Height was set at 1,246 mm to cheat wind resistance, and fitment of fixed headlights allowed a shorter, steeper nose that improved high-speed stability.
Performance Ladder
Base cars ran a 6.0 L V8 and laid the foundation for successive high-power editions. The Z06 landed for 2006 with a 7.0 L LS7 V8; the supercharged ZR1 topped the regular production range in 2009; and the Grand Sport brought wide-body aero and dry-sump lubrication in 2010. The 427 Convertible sang the swan song in 2013 with the Z06 engine in open-top form.
Motorsport Legacy
The Pratt & Miller-built C6.R collected victories in the American Le Mans Series GT1 class and conquered GTE-Pro at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Factory-backed cars also starred in the FIA GT1 World Championship, cementing the C6’s reputation as both a road weapon and a Saturday-to-Sunday track champion.
