Unveiled for the 2009–2013 model years, the Chevrolet Corvette C6 ZR1 was the ultimate expression of the sixth-generation Corvette, pushing the production-car envelope with a supercharged LS9 V8 and carbon-ceramic brakes. It served as the halo variant before the C7 arrived in 2014.
History
The ZR1 nameplate resurfaced after a long hiatus, returning on the C6 platform in 2009 to commemorate the 1990–95 ZR-1. Chevrolet moved from a DOHC design to a simpler yet more powerful supercharged pushrod engine, turning the Corvette into a legitimate rival to European exotics at a fraction of the price.
Design
A wider carbon-fiber hood with a polycarbonate window exposes the supercharger, functional vents cool the brakes and differential, and a tall rear spoiler balances the larger front splitter. Length is 4 459 mm—35 mm longer than the standard C6—while lightweight woven panels shaved roughly 60 kg versus steel counterparts.
Performance
Powered by the hand-built 6.2-litre LS9 supercharged V8 paired to a TR6060 six-speed manual, the ZR1 produced 638 hp and 604 lb-ft of torque. Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes provided fade-free stopping power, and Magnetic Selective Ride Control offered adaptive damping for both road and track.
Motorsport Tie-ins
Technology flowed between the road ZR1 and the factory-built C6.R GT racer that dominated the American Le Mans Series and won GTE-Pro at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, proving that lessons learned on the circuit translated directly to the fastest production Corvette of its era.
