Built in China by Changan Automobile, the Chana Star emerged in 1999 as a practical line of microvans and light trucks aimed at urban businesses and small-fleet operators. The nameplate quietly evolved to Kaicene Star in later years, marking it as Changan's enduring answer to low-cost, high-utilitarian transport.
History
Launched under the Chana brand in 1999, the Star filled the niche for compact cargo and passenger microvans in Chinese cities. Around the mid-2010s the entire Star family was shifted to Kaicene, a sub-brand created to focus on commercial vehicles, streamlining Changan’s identity while keeping the same versatile platform in production for more than two decades.
Design & Purpose
True to its microvan brief, the Star offers tall, box-sided proportions with sliding side doors and large rear barn doors, maximising interior volume within a footprint barely longer than a subcompact car. Interior trims are spartan, prioritising wipe-clean surfaces and configurable seating that folds or removes for pure cargo use.
Legacy
From street-vendor deliveries to rural school runs, millions of Stars and later Kaicene Stars have become everyday fixtures across China, embodying reliability that outlasts cosmetic facelifts and subtle mechanical upgrades.
