Cadillac ambitiously returned to full-size rear-wheel-drive sedans with the CT6, launched in 2016 after a 20-year absence and directly retiring the front-drive XTS. This 5.2-metre four-door aimed to square up against the German executive elite while reintroducing the classic long-hood, short-deck Cadillac silhouette.
History
Unveiled at the 2015 New York International Auto Show, the first-generation CT6 hit U.S. dealers in March 2016 and sat atop Cadillac’s revised alphanumeric range. It was the brand’s first rear-drive flagship since the 1996 Fleetwood and ushered in the new ‘CT’ naming convention that would replace the familiar three-letter system across the lineup. Production lasted through model-year 2020 with no announced direct successor.
Design & Dimensions
Measuring 5184 mm long, 1880 mm wide and 1472 mm tall, the CT6 delivered a stretched wheelbase without the bulk of traditional limousines, keeping proportions cleaner than many long-wheelbase rivals. Aluminum-intensive construction shaved weight, while slim LED lighting and a vertically oriented front grille reinforced Cadillac’s evolving Art & Science design language.
Legacy
Though short-lived, the CT6 re-established Cadillac engineering credibility through advanced chassis tech like the first magnetic ride suspension in its class and an available twin-turbo V8 in later 550-hp CT6-V guise. Limited U.S. uptake and the closure of the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly line brought production to a quiet end, leaving the brand without a true full-size sedan as it pivots to electric crossovers.
