BYD Song

Since 2015, BYD Auto has offered the Song line of compact crossover SUVs, steadily widening its footprint in China’s crowded SUV market with each update. Simple sheet-metal evolution hides continuous power-train upgrades that pushed the model family well beyond its original 2015 starting point.
History
BYD launched the first Song at the 2015 Shanghai Auto Show, slotting it between the smaller Yuan and the larger Tang. Aimed at China’s booming compact-SUV class, production ramped quickly at BYD’s Xi’an plant, helping the brand shift from sedans to high-riding family cars.
Design & Dimensions
Built on a flexible front-wheel-drive platform, the Song line carries contemporary crossover proportions with a 1 870 mm width for stable stance across all variants. Sheet metal went through two facelifts—2017 and 2020—switching from BYD’s red-blade logo to the simplified silver script while enlarging the grille and adding full-width LED lamps.
Performance Evolution
Early 2015 cars used a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine mated to a six-speed dual-clutch box. By 2018, BYD inserted the Song DM plug-in hybrid, combining a 1.5 turbo with an electric motor for a 0-100 km/h sprint around 4.9 s. The 2021 Song Plus pushes output to 185 kW from a larger 1.5-litre hybrid unit, stretching electric range past 110 km NEDC.
