BYD Seal U

Marketed outside China as the BYD Seal U, this battery-electric compact SUV is the global face of what BYD calls the original Song Plus introduced in 2020. Its arrival reflects BYD’s rapid pivot from petrol to electrified drivetrains in a once combustion-only product line.
Product evolution
The platform began life simply as the BYD Song Plus, a petrol-powered compact crossover launched in 2020 with a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine. By mid-2021 BYD had rolled out the Song Plus DM-i plug-in hybrid and the all-electric Song Plus EV, and exactly one year later, in March 2022, the petrol variant was quietly dropped as BYD exited ICE production altogether. The EV version is now exported under the new model name Seal U to align with BYD’s growing “Seal” family of electric cars.
Design & packaging
At 4 790 mm long, the Seal U occupies the core of the compact SUV segment, matching most European C-segment contenders for length while offering a pure-electric architecture that frees up cabin space for a flat floor and generous rear legroom. Design cues carry over from the Chinese-market Song Plus EV—sharp LED lighting, broad shoulder line, and sealed grille—reinterpreted for export markets with fresh badging.
Current positioning
Sold as the BYD Seal U in markets such as Europe and Australasia, the vehicle inherits the 2022-on electric powertrain of the Song Plus EV. It offers front-wheel drive from a single electric motor and a BYD Blade lithium-iron-phosphate battery whose capacity and range ratings vary by region. With ICE versions gone, the Seal U encapsulates BYD’s complete transition to electrification for a formerly petrol-first model range.
