Launched in 2023, the BYD Seagull is the marque’s first pure-electric city car, slotting beneath the Dolphin and giving BYD its strictest claim yet on the affordable EV market.
Design and positioning
The Seagull debuts BYD’s Ocean Series styling at its most compact A00-class footprint. Measuring just 3.7 m long, it combines short overhangs with a high roofline to maximise interior volume yet retain supermini agility in dense city traffic.
Sales strategy
BYD markets the Seagull exclusively through its Ocean Network retail chain—purpose-built stores separate from the Dynasty-series outlets—to emphasise the electric-first character and keep price points competitive. Online pre-orders opened in China during April 2023.
Range and variants
Domestic variants offer two battery packs—approx. 30 kWh and 38 kWh—yielding 300 km-plus (CLTC) range in the larger version. Performance sits at 55 kW from a front-mounted permanent-magnet motor, giving 0–50 km/h in just over 5 seconds, ideal for stop-go urban commuting.
Market reception
Within its first sales month the Seagull topped China’s EV city-car charts, moving over 15 000 units and undercutting competitors such as the Wuling Air ev on payload while matching them on price.
