Following on from the BYD S6, the BYD S7 extended the midsize Chinese crossover’s lifespan from 2015 to 2018, giving BYD Auto a larger three-row SUV to anchor its early electrified lineup.
Origins of the S7
The BYD S7 debuted in 2015 as an enlarged, seven-seat evolution of the S6. Where the S6 bowed in 2011 as BYD’s first crossover, the S7 stretched wheelbase, added a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine, and introduced a refreshed fascia with LED lighting. The model kept production lines running at the Xi’an plant even after the S6 ended in May 2016.
Design & Practicality
Seating for seven and a higher roofline gave BYD S7 buyers genuine family space at a competitive price. Interior upgrades included a larger touchscreen, relocated HVAC controls, and new soft-touch materials that lifted the cabin above the more basic S6.
Exit & Legacy
Sales of the BYD S7 wound down in 2018 as the company shifted focus to the smaller but newer Song and Tang SUV families with full hybrid and PHEV powertrains. The S7 remains one of BYD’s last purely petrol-powered large SUVs before the brand’s pivot to electrification.
