Built exclusively for Denver’s 16th Street pedestrian mall, the BYD K10MR is a custom electric shuttle that redefined how downtown commuters move. Produced by BYD Auto, it replaced combustion buses on the RTD’s FreeRide shuttle route with near-silent, zero-emission technology.
Purpose-Built for a Pedestrian City
The K10MR was developed from the ground up to handle dozens of stop-and-go cycles and constant passenger loading. Its specifications were tailored to the 1.2-mile 16th Street Mall shuttle, a free service that carries thousands of office workers, shoppers and tourists between Union Station and Civic Center every day. By integrating low-sidewalk doors and a wide, level floor, the design speeds up boarding in crowds while keeping the vehicle footprint minimal next to outdoor cafés and storefronts.
Powertrain & Urban Operation
With an all-electric driveline derived from BYD’s commercial bus platform, the K10MR runs entirely on batteries recharged overnight at RTD’s maintenance yard. Unlike conventional buses, it produces no tailpipe emissions in the mall’s confined space and operates near-silently under restaurant canopies. Typical range on a single charge exceeds daily service hours, eliminating mid-day refueling downtime.
Retention & Legacy
Deployed from 2018 onward, the K10MR fleet has remained Denver’s primary mall shuttles, demonstrating day-to-day reliability under eight years of all-weather service. Their presence brought international attention to closed-loop urban transit, prompting other North American cities to evaluate similar BYD shuttles for restricted downtown corridors.
