Unveiled at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, the Bentley EXP 9 F signaled the British marque’s bold pivot from ultra-luxury saloons to the SUV segment that would soon birth the Bentayga. The concept sketched a high-riding Bentley for the first time, instantaneously becoming a lightning rod for debate among brand purists.
Concept & Origin
Setting up camp on Bentley’s stand in March 2012, the EXP 9 F ("Experimental 9-Flagship") was the company’s outright preview of what a Bentley SUV could be. The ‘F’ suffix pointed to a flex-fuel drivetrain compatible with petrol or bio-ethanol, underlining the brand’s tentative exploration of efficiency measures.
Design Reaction
Split grilles, massive 23-inch wheels and stretch-bonnet proportions polarized show-goers, many of whom saw a Bentley station-wagon on stilts. Inside, quilted leather, polished metal organ-stop vents and a panoramic glass roof attempted to transplant Mulsanne-level opulence into a taller body.
Path to Production
Despite the aesthetic controversy, parent Volkswagen Group approved development. By late 2015 the EXP 9 F’s proportions and design themes resurfaced in toned-down form in the Bentayga, whose mechanical package, platform and overall silhouette trace straight back to this single motor-show concept.
