Introduced in 1913, the Audi Type E became Audi’s largest passenger car before the outbreak of the First World War. Its arrival marked a decisive step up for the brand, showcasing the company’s ability to build substantial, fast touring machines when most rivals still offered smaller, low-powered models.
Design & Size
Audi positioned the Type E at the top of its pre-war range. The long body and four-seat layout reflected the era’s grand-touring fashion, and at 1 225 kg it significantly outweighed the lighter Type B/C models, hinting at a strong chassis and generous equipment for the time.
Performance
With a quoted top speed of 105 km/h, the Type E was among the quickest German-built cars of 1913—fast enough for the primitive rural roads and the emerging Autobahn precursors. A large-displacement four-cylinder engine and improved rear-axle gearing delivered smooth motorway cruising unheard of in smaller contemporaries.
Historical Context
Production began only a year before continental Europe was engulfed by war, cutting short its commercial life. Fewer Audi Type E chassis appear in surviving registries today, making each known survivor a rare document of the marque’s pre-war engineering ambitions.
