Audi Type C

From 1912 onward, the Audi Type C defined the young brand’s reputation for solid engineering on road and battlefield alike, paving the way for the later Audi Type K.
History
Presented in 1912, the compact Audi Type C was soon booked not only by civilian buyers but also by the German Army, which pressed the agile chassis into service during World War I. After the armistice, the company briefly restarted production to meet renewed demand, delivering a total of 1,116 cars before the model was phased out in favor of the Audi Type K.
Engineering & Performance
At just 920 kg the car was light for its era, yet robust enough to handle the rough military roads of 1914. A modest engine pushed top speed to 90 km/h—a respectable figure at the time—and one that helped the Type C prove surprisingly effective in early rally competitions.
Legacy
Rally wins across Europe and dependable service in uniform gave Audi its first widespread public recognition. The Type C’s commercial success established the company’s early identity, laying practical and reputational foundations that would influence every Audi model that followed.
