Unveiled at the 2009 Detroit North American International Auto Show, the Audi Sportback concept introduced a bold fastback silhouette and a five-door layout that would soon define two of Audi’s production pillars.
Design & Format
The show car stretched 1.93 m across yet stood just 1.4 m tall, delivering a low, wide stance that hinted at grand-tourer proportions within a practical hatchback body. Its sweeping roofline and frameless door glass previewed the ‘Sportback’ design language now shared across the A5 and A7 ranges.
Production Roadmap
Audi confirmed after the reveal that the concept was effectively the advanced blueprint for two separate production models. The A5 Sportback arrived in July 2009, adopting the concept’s silhouette for the mid-size segment, while the larger Audi A7 Sportback followed exactly one year later, debuting at Munich’s Pinakothek der Moderne in July 2010.
Lineage Impact
Although formally a one-off concept, the Sportback effectively launched an entire fastback branch of the Audi portfolio. Every subsequent five-door Sportback—from the A3 to the e-tron GT—owes its proportions and packaging logic to this 2009 design study.
