Produced from 2008, the Audi Q5 entered its second generation in 2018 and soon gained a sleek-roof sibling: the Q5 Sportback coupe-SUV, bringing sportback fastback proportions to a luxury compact crossover.
History & Market Launch
Audi introduced the second-generation Q5 (type FY, MLB Evo) at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, with sales beginning in 2017. Building on the success of the original first-generation model—the third vehicle to ride on the B8 MLB architecture—the new Q5 aimed to broaden its appeal. The Q5 Sportback derivative followed, delivering coupe-like design atop the same technical package.
Design & Fastback Layout
By stretching the roof rearward into a tapering fastback line, designers created a more coupé-like silhouette without altering interior length significantly. The steeply raked rear hatch, slimmer window graphic, and integrated spoiler distinguish it from the standard Q5 while preserving the brand’s hexagonal grille and LED light signatures.
Platform & Engineering
Both regular Q5 and Q5 Sportback sit on the MLB Evo modular-longitudinal platform, shared with the contemporary Audi A4 (B9) and A5 ranges. This switch to the lighter, stiffer MLB Evo allows weight reductions of up to 90 kg over the previous Q5 while enabling adaptive air suspension, quattro ultra all-wheel drive, and full suite of driver-assist features.
