Audi MP01

Long before the Audi A6 arrived, Audi developed the in-house code-named “MP01,” internally the first-generation Audi 100 that quietly laid out the mechanical and styling blueprint for every modern mid-size executive car that followed.
Conception & Design
Developed as project “MP01” within Neckarsulm, the sedan measured 4 590 mm from nose to tail, bracketing it between family and full-size segments that Wolfsburg had not yet addressed. Clean, unadorned lines and a low-drag nose previewed the aerodynamic ethos that would later define Audi sedans.
Generations & Evolution
What began as the C1 in 1968 ran through four distinct generations (C1–C4) until the badge changed to Audi A6 in 1997. Body styles grew from the original two-door to include four-doors, five-doors, and the practical 100 Avant introduced in the 1970s.
Legacy
The mechanical packaging, longitudinal front-drive layout, and understated styling cues pioneered by the MP01 lived on, transferred wholesale to its direct successor—the Audi A6—while the 100/200 nameplates quietly retired after nearly three decades and over four million units.
