Audi Front

Debuting in 1933, the Audi Front UW 220 was Europe’s first car to marry front-wheel drive with a straight-six engine at a time when most manufacturers still clung to rear-wheel setups. Two brief production runs made it the only Audi built in volume throughout the 1930s, bridging the company’s pre-war Type T with the later Audi 920.
Origins & History
Audi unveiled the Front UW 220 in early 1933, shortly after the formation of Auto Union. It was conceived to modernize the aging Audi Type T and leapfrog competitors through advanced drivetrain packaging. After only a year and half on the market, the original UW 220 was superseded by the UW 225 in 1935, whose larger 2.25-litre engine addressed early criticism of modest power. Production of all Front variants ceased in April 1938, though catalogs still listed the model into 1939.
Design & Engineering
Key to the Front’s significance was the positioning of the longitudinal six-cylinder engine ahead of the driven front axle—a layout almost unheard of outside of smaller front-drive cars like the Citroën Traction Avant. The body sat on an all-steel platform with independent front suspension, giving the car unusual stability and grip for its era. External dimensions were compact at 1,650 mm width and 1,575 mm height, yet the cabin retained generous headroom thanks to tall greenhouse proportions.
Legacy
Between 1933 and 1938, no other Audi bore the four-ring badge in meaningful numbers, making the Front the marque’s lone standard-bearer during the pre-Second World War era. While sales figures were modest, its technical precedent influenced subsequent Auto Union developments and quietly prepared engineering teams for the shift to front-drive concepts that would re-emerge after the war.
