Audi’s electric era began with the Q8 e-tron, the brand’s first mass-produced battery SUV that was introduced in 2019 after several years of concept teasing. Its arrival marked Audi’s formal entry into the zero-emission premium crossover segment and set the template for future EVs from Ingolstadt.
Birth of the e-tron
Shown first as a concept at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, the e-tron intrigued the public with its blend of familiar Audi design and all-electric drivetrain. The definitive production version was revealed in San Francisco on 17 September 2018, then publicly debuted weeks later at the 2018 Paris Motor Show, before customer deliveries kicked off in May 2019.
Design and dimensions
The Q8 e-tron is a mid-size luxury crossover measuring 4901 mm long, 1935 mm wide and 1629 mm tall on a substantial 2490 kg footprint. A Sportback coupe-SUV silhouette followed in 2020, giving buyers a swoopier roofline without sacrificing practicality.
Performance & positioning
As Audi’s inaugural battery-electric volume model, the e-tron sits at the intersection of quattro heritage and forward-looking EV tech. Dual-motor all-wheel drive and adaptive air suspension underpin the driving experience, while the luxurious cabin and extensive driver-assistance suite keep it firmly in the premium camp.
