History
Launched three years after the first-generation 8L bowed out, the A3 8P arrived on Volkswagen Group’s PQ35 platform alongside the Mk5 Golf. It carried Audi’s new single-frame grille from the 2004 A6 and expanded the model line with both three- and five-door Sportback variants, plus the first A3 cabriolet (2008). Production ran through 2012, when the 8V generation took over.
Body Styles & Markets
Beyond the familiar three-door hatch, Audi added the longer five-door Sportback that maximized rear-seat and cargo space. A soft-top convertible joined the range in late 2007, targeting buyers wanting open-air motoring in the premium compact segment. Together, these body styles spread the 8P across Europe, North America and Asia, making it the most globally available A3 to date.
Legacy
By broadening the A3 family beyond a simple hatch, the 8P firmly established Audi in the compact premium class and set the template—hatch, Sportback, cabriolet—for every subsequent A3 generation. It also demonstrated that Audi could deliver Quattro traction and upscale interiors in a smaller, more attainable package, influencing competitors like BMW’s 1 Series and Mercedes’ A-Class.
