The Volkswagen Polo Playa is a supermini produced in South Africa from 1996, initially as a rebadged SEAT Ibiza Mk2. It was the first generation of Polo sold in the region and was later replaced by the Polo Mk4.
History
The Polo Playa was introduced in South Africa in 1996 as a rebadged version of the SEAT Ibiza Mk2 five-door hatchback. It was sold alongside the Polo Classic, a sedan based on the SEAT Córdoba Mk1.
Design and Variants
The Polo Playa shared its mechanical components with the Ibiza but had distinct body panels. It was available in 1.4i, 1.6i, and 1.8i models, all with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The name continued to be used for the Polo hatchback until 2006, even after the introduction of the Polo Mk4 in 2002.
Legacy
The Polo Playa marked the beginning of the Polo's presence in South Africa. It was eventually phased out in favor of the Polo Mk4, which became the new standard for the Polo line in the region.
