Volkswagen launched the Golf Mk5 in 2003 as the fifth generation of its compact Golf hatchback, building on the Volkswagen Group A5 (PQ35) platform and replacing the Golf Mk4. The Mk5 was sold from 2004 to 2009 in Europe and was also marketed as the Volkswagen Rabbit in the US and Canada. This generation brought significant updates to the Golf line.
History
The Volkswagen Golf Mk5 was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in October 2003. It was sold in three- or five-door hatchback configurations and later as a five-door station wagon from 2007 to 2009. In North America, the Golf Mk5 was badged as the Volkswagen Rabbit, although the GTI variant retained the GTI name.
