The Pontiac Torpedo was produced from 1940 through 1948. Initially, it was the top-of-the-line Pontiac model, but from 1941, the name was applied across three lines: Custom Torpedo, DeLuxe Torpedo, and Streamline Torpedo. By 1942, the Torpedo name was used solely for the base line of Pontiacs.
Design and Features
The Pontiac Torpedo was notable for its increased width, allowing for three passengers on both the front and rear bench seats. The removal of running boards added to the interior space. Initially, it came with an 8-cylinder engine and more standard features than other Pontiacs. From 1941, both 6-cylinder and 8-cylinder engines were available across the Torpedo models.
Legacy
The Torpedo was eventually replaced by the Pontiac Chieftain in 1949. Its production period saw significant changes in automotive design, particularly in accommodating more passengers by widening the vehicles and removing running boards.
