Produced from 1971 to 1977, the Opel Rekord D was a large family car that succeeded the Opel Rekord C and was later replaced by the Opel Rekord E. It was launched in the West German market at the start of 1972 with a completely new body, although it shared its wheelbase and most engines with its predecessor.
History
The Opel Rekord D was introduced on Opel's Rüsselsheim production lines during the closing weeks of 1971. Initially, it was referred to as the 'Opel Rekord II' in early advertising and press material, but this name was later dropped.
Design and Engineering
The Rekord D had a new body design, with a width of 1718mm and a height of 1415mm. It retained the wheelbase and most engines from the Opel Rekord C. A significant update came in September 1972 with the introduction of a diesel-powered option.
Generations
The Opel Rekord D was part of the Rekord series, following the Rekord C and preceding the Rekord E. It was produced for approximately six years before being replaced at the end of the 1977 summer holiday shutdown.
