Introduced at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show, the Mitsubishi Diamante was a hardtop car produced by Mitsubishi Motors from 1990 to 2005, notable for winning the Japan Car of the Year award in 1990.
History
The Mitsubishi Diamante was created by modifying the Mitsubishi Galant, adding 6.6 cm (2.6 in) to its length. It went on sale in Japan in May 1990. The Diamante's platform was later used for the Mitsubishi 3000GT.
Design and Development
The Diamante was derived from the Mitsubishi Galant, a model that had itself won the Japan Car of the Year award in 1987. The Diamante's design was achieved by splicing an extra section into the Galant's body.
Legacy
The Diamante won the Japan Car of the Year award in 1990, a testament to its significance in the Japanese automotive market at the time.
