History
The Mitsubishi Colt (A20) was built from 1963 until 1970. After a May 1968 facelift, it was marketed as the 'New Colt'. The Colt series was eventually overshadowed by the introduction of the Colt Galant in late 1969 and was later replaced by the Mitsubishi Lancer.
Design and Variants
The Colt 1000 was available in four body styles and on two different wheelbases. Engine displacements gradually increased over time, with versions labeled 1000, 1100, 1200, and 1500. The dimensions were kept compact to comply with Japanese Government regulations and minimize annual road tax obligations.
Legacy
Along with smaller, fastback Colts, the Colt 1000 formed the mainstay of Mitsubishi's passenger car lineup in the 1960s. Its design and regulatory compliance strategy reflected Mitsubishi's approach to the Japanese market at the time.
