Opel Frontera is a branding name that has tagged two very different vehicles: a rugged body-on-frame SUV of the 1990s and early 2000s built in the UK, and an all-new B-segment crossover/battery-electric package announced for 2024.
1990s–early 2000s Frontera
The original Opel Frontera was a right-hand-drive sport-utility vehicle based on the Isuzu MU, produced under the General Motors partnership at the Luton plant in the United Kingdom. Offered in both short- and long-wheelbase body styles, it gave European buyers an affordable, trail-capable 4×4 that competed squarely with the likes of the Land Rover Discovery and Toyota 4Runner of the era.
2024 revival
Reviving the nameplate two decades later, the 2024 Opel Frontera moves into the B-segment crossover class. Available with either petrol combustion power or as a full battery-electric model, it targets urban and light-adventure driving rather than rugged off-roading, effectively replacing the departed Opel Antara.
Identical successors and parallel timeline
When production of the original Frontera wrapped up at Luton in 2004, Opel did not immediately slot in a direct replacement. The consolidated line stepped forward only when the 2024 Frontera appeared—formally succeeding the Antara that had filled the mid-size/compact SUV gap during the intervening years.
