History & Production
Manufactured by Isuzu from 1997 to 2001, the VehiCROSS was developed on shortened Isuzu Trooper underpinnings and aimed squarely at markets seeking a lifestyle-focused, high-performance 4×4. Demand remained low throughout its four-year run, resulting in just one global generation before the line was quietly discontinued.
Design
The VehiCROSS wore aggressively sculpted plastic-clad bodywork, ahead-of-its-time LED taillights, and a coupe-like roofline that made it look like a concept car in production trim. Its compact footprint—4.13 m long, 1.79 m wide, 1.70 m tall—delivered standout stance without the bulk of larger SUVs.
Engineering
Under the avant-garde skin sat a chassis derived from the Trooper, complete with a torquey 3.5 L DOHC V6, full-time 4WD via Isuzu’s Torque-On-Demand system, and heavy-duty suspension that gave the 1 794 kg SUV genuine off-road credibility.
