Isuzu Trooper

Spanning three continents and more than two decades, the Isuzu Trooper transported families and towed trailers from 1981 until its final 2002 model year. This burly four-wheel-drive wagon became one of the first Japanese-built SUVs to go toe-to-toe with Range Rover in global markets.
History
Isuzu introduced the first-generation Trooper in September 1981, essentially placing a tall steel body onto the ladder frame of the Isuzu Faster/Chevrolet LUV pickup. Aimed at utility users who needed off-road competence without pickup limitations, it sold steadily in North America, Europe, and Australia. Production ended the first series in 1991, the year the second, larger generation (code-named UBS) arrived with more power and safety features.
Generations
First-generation Troopers (1981 – 1991) launched with either a 2.0-liter gasoline four, a 2.2-liter diesel, or later a 2.3-liter turbo diesel option. Sheet-metal remained boxy and spare; short- and long-wheelbase bodies shared few curves. For 1991 the Trooper grew taller, longer, and significantly heavier, adding available V6 engines and full-time four-wheel drive. A 1998 facelift refreshed the grille and interior trim and enlarged the standard 3.2-liter or optional 3.5-liter V6.
Global Badge Engineering
Around the world the Trooper carried more names than most airports. In Japan it was sold as the Isuzu Bighorn; in Europe as the Opel/Vauxhall Monterey; in Australia and Latin America as the Holden Jackaroo; and briefly in North America at Honda and Acura dealerships renamed the Honda Horizon and Acura SLX, giving luxury buyers a sibling to the Acura-badged vehicle slightly re-skinned with softer bumpers.
