Produced from 1963 to 1973, the Isuzu Bellett marked Isuzu’s first wholly Japanese-designed passenger car after years of assembly deals. Replacing the license-built Hillman Minx, it formed the stepping stone to the later Isuzu Gemini.
History and position
The Bellett arrived at a pivotal moment for Isuzu, signaling a shift from licensed production of British cars to independent design and development. Sold across its 10-year run mainly in domestic and Asian markets, it bridged Isuzu’s post-war roots and its later compact-car ambitions.
Dimensions and layout
With a footprint of 4030 mm length, 1495 mm width and 1391 mm height, the Bellett sat squarely in the subcompact class of its era. A rear-wheel-drive layout, common for Japanese sedans of the time, was carried forward under a clean three-box silhouette.
Generations and legacy
One clean cycle was offered through 1973, after which the Bellett bowed out and was replaced by the fresher Isuzu Gemini. While not exported in large numbers, the nameplate is remembered by enthusiasts as the first authentic Isuzu passenger car.
