The HSV W427 was General Motors' ultimate Australian muscle flagship based on the VE Commodore. Produced by Holden Special Vehicles in 2008, only 137 sedans were built, each packing a 7-litre LS7 V8 lifted from the C6 Corvette Z06.
Engineering
Using the VE Commodore architecture, the W427 stretched nearly five metres long while keeping mass at 1.87 t thanks to extensive aluminium suspension arms and a redesigned rear undertray. The hand-built 7.0 L V8 unleashed 375 kW (503 hp) and 640 N⋅m through either a heavy-duty 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic, permitting a 0–100 km/h dash of 4.9 s and an electronically limited 250 km/h top speed.
Design
Visually, the W427 added a deeper front bar with large brake ducts, Venturi-style rear bumper, and forged 19-inch wheels hiding 365 mm front rotors. Inside, HSV trimmed the cabin in full leather, optional light-tone hand-stitched inserts, and unique build-number plaques on the dash.
Running Gear
AP Racing supplied six-piston front calipers and four-piston rears working with cross-drilled rotors. KW Variant adjustable suspension reduced ride height 25 mm while the wider front track improved high-speed stability.
Market Role
Launched at $155,000 AUD, the W427 was Australia’s then-most expensive locally built sedan, positioned above the Clubsport and Senator variants. Despite the price, the 137-car run (against an original plan of 427) sold within months before leading into the subsequent 2010 Gen-F series.
