Built by Holden Special Vehicles from 1996 to 2016, the Grange took mainstream Commodore underpinnings and wrapped them in full-size luxury trim to create Australia’s take on a high-performance executive sedan.
Design and Dimensions
With a 5,160 mm footprint that stretched 175 mm longer than a standard Commodore, the Grange blended limousine cargo space with performance cues. Its 1,899 mm width and 1,480 mm height emphasized a low, wide stance that set it apart from more traditional long-wheelbase luxury offerings.
Performance Heritage
Produced exclusively by HSV, the Grange paired locally built V8 engines—starting with the 5.0-litre and later the 6.2-litre Gen-IV aluminums—with bespoke suspension tuning, uprated brakes and sound-deadening to deliver limousine comfort at outright sports-sedan speed.
Twenty-Year Run
Across two decades the Grange evolved through three Commodore platform generations: VT/VX, VE and the final VF. Changes over time included switchable Magnetic Ride Control, 430-hp GTS-spec engines, and extensive infotainment upgrades, making the final 2016 cars markedly quicker and better finished than the original 1996 VT-series cars.
