History
Holden launched the HK in January 1968 as a direct replacement for the HR series that had run from 1966. Despite lasting only until the end of 1969, it offered the broadest model spread the brand had seen to date, eclipsing the outgoing HR’s eight variants.
Model Line-Up
The range was split across five distinct badges—Belmont, Kingswood, Premier, Brougham, and the debuting Monaro—covering everything from family transport to early muscle-car aspirations.
Design & Dimensions
Holden enlarged and strengthened the basic HR architecture, resulting in a visibly chunkier, more squared-off stance. The engineering changes made the HK both larger and heavier across every body style, reflecting a move toward greater safety and comfort.
Legacy
Though short-lived, the HK effectively bridged the simpler 1960s Holdens and the beefier HT series that followed. Its Monaro sub-brand, born here, would soon become synonymous with Australian performance motoring.
