Holden ECOmmodore

Unveiled at the 2000 Melbourne International Motor Show, the Holden ECOmmodore was a pioneering hybrid concept built on the Commodore (VT) platform in partnership with Australia’s CSIRO. The one-off show car also moonlighted on the world stage, ferrying the Olympic torch during the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics relay.
History and Purpose
Holden and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) worked together to turn a regular VT-series Commodore into a working hybrid demonstrator. The ECOmmodore appeared only at the 2000 Melbourne Motor Show and was later pressed into shuttle duty for the 2000 Summer Olympics Torch Relay, giving spectators their first (and last) glimpse of a battery-assisted lion-badge sedan.
Engineering
Although technical details were never published beyond the broad label of 'hybrid', the project confirmed that Holden's locally engineered rear-drive platform could accommodate electric assist without radical redesign. The show car retained the exterior profile and cabin space of the donor VT, proving the packaging feasibility Australian engineers sought.
