Between 1968 and 1971, General Motors Australia marketed the larger-than-life Holden Brougham, a luxury four-door aimed squarely at Ford’s Fairlane and conceived almost overnight to protect market share.
History & Positioning
Holden rushed the Brougham through development in 1968 as Ford’s Fairlane began dominating the Australian premium large-car segment. Launched with minimal tooling changes to the existing HK series platform, it lasted just one full model cycle before the more sophisticated Statesman took over for 1971.
Design & Dimensions
The Brougham stretched 4 877 mm nose to tail—noticeably longer than contemporary Holden Premier sedans—while width and height measured 1 816 mm and 1 461 mm respectively. Visual cues included vinyl roofs, bright grille and bumper jewelry, and a lengthened rear overhang that added trunk volume aimed at chauffeur and hire-car operators.
Legacy
Although produced for only three seasons, the Brougham served as Holden’s first deliberate step into the upper-large segment and directly paved the way for the Statesman line that would dominate Australian executive transport through the 1970s and beyond.
