Introduced in 1999 as a replacement for the Daewoo Tico, the pint-sized Daewoo Matiz is General Motors’ long-running entry in the city-car segment and the basis for later Chevrolet-badged variants.
History and Evolution
The Matz debuted in late 1998 as a 1999 model, squarely aimed at congested urban roads from Seoul to Warsaw. After GM acquired Daewoo’s automotive assets, the car was gradually re-badged from 2005 onward as the Chevrolet Matiz, yet the core design and mechanical package carried over largely unchanged for more than a decade.
Design and Dimensions
With a footprint just 3 495 mm long and 1 495 mm wide, the three-door/five-door hatchback offers true micro-car maneuverability. The upright roofline peaks at 1 485 mm, providing surprisingly generous headroom despite the compact length, while the tall greenhouse and large rear glass aid visibility in tight city traffic.
Light-weight Engineering
At only 851 kg, the Matiz’s body-in-white and chassis components were optimized for low mass, enabling frugal three- or four-cylinder engines to push the featherweight structure along without overtaxing fuel economy or emissions systems.
