Launched for 1937, the Cadillac Series 65 debuted as Cadillac’s second step into the mid-price market, riding the larger C-body chassis to sit just above the LaSalle in the marque’s pecking order.
Background & Positioning
Cadillac introduced the Series 65 one year after the shorter-wheelbase Series 60 to broaden its reach without eroding prestige. By switching to the General Motors C-body platform—shared with senior Buicks and Oldsmobiles—the car gained extra interior space while retaining Cadillac’s eight-cylinder power and extensive brightwork. That positioning let dealers compete head-to-head with upper-crust LaSalles while reaffirming Cadillac itself as the top of the GM hierarchy.
1937 Model Year
Offered only as a single-year model, the Series 65 came in sedan, coupé and convertible body styles sourced from Fisher Body. Minor trim upgrades over the Series 60 included richer upholstery, dual side-mount spares on higher trims, and an exclusive chrome grille texture. Production numbers were modest, and when the 1938 catalogs arrived the line was quietly folded into what would become the far better-known Cadillac Series 62.
Legacy
Although the Series 65 itself vanished after 1937, its combination of C-body room and Cadillac engineering previewed the template used by the Series 62 from 1938 onward. In effect, the brief one-year run served as a market test that validated moving Cadillac downward in price without sacrificing core brand identity.
