Introduced halfway through 1931, the Series 355 replaced the short-lived Cadillac Series 353 and remained Cadillac’s core eight-cylinder range until 1935. Positioned as an attainable step into the brand’s hierarchy, it helped sustain Cadillac volume during the worst years of the Great Depression.
Design and Body Styles
Buyers could choose from no fewer than six distinct bodies, including a 2-door club coupe, 2-door convertible, 4-door convertible, 4-door sedan, 4-door town car, and a formal 4-door limousine. Each rode the same ladder chassis and wore Cadillac’s then-new art-deco styling cues shared with the larger V-12 and V-16 siblings.
Engineering
A single V-8 engine—monobloc construction, 353 cu in (5.8 L)—was standard across the line, producing smooth, torque-rich power with the quiet demeanor expected of mounted police and professional-car fleets. Bodies sat on a 134-inch wheelbase, giving the Series 355 an imposing road presence.
Afterlife and Legacy
After the 1935 model year, the Series 355 bowed out and was effectively replaced by the Cadillac Series 70/75, carving out a lasting precedent for mid-tier luxury within Cadillac’s expanding lineup.
