Unveiled in 1970, the Cadillac NART was a bold concept car created under the direction of GM Design chief Bill Mitchell in partnership with enthusiast Luigi “Coco” Chinetti of North American Racing Team. Though never green-lit for production, the wedge-shaped two-seater previewed exotic proportions and engineering ideas that would echo through Cadillac design for decades.
Design & Styling
The NART’s silhouette married a long, sculpted nose to a truncated Kamm tail, producing a 0.32 drag coefficient remarkable for 1970. Hidden headlamps, pop-up rear quarter windows and a fully glassed fastback roofline emphasized its space-age ethos. Inside, a driver-centric dash with aircraft-style toggle switches framed a set of deeply bolstered bucket seats trimmed in glove-soft leather.
Concept Origins
Bill Mitchell’s advanced studio developed the NART partly as a response to European mid-engine supercars sweeping U.S. motor shows. Chinetti reportedly pressed Cadillac for a road-ready halo model that could race at Le Mans, hence the North American Racing Team initials carried on the badge. Two hand-built metal prototypes were constructed on a modified B-body platform, fitted early 500 cu-in V8s and transaxle proposals.
Legacy
Although management shelved the NART after cost studies and tightening emissions rules, its sharp wedge profile and fastback proportions resurfaced in 1975-76 Eldorado styling cues and later in the 1988 Cadillac Voyage concept. The surviving silver prototype remains a centerpiece of GM’s Heritage Collection.
