Born as a bold centerpiece for Cadillac's stand at the 1999 North American International Auto Show, the Evoq gave the marque's Art & Science design language its first tangible form—and established the look Cadillac would use for the next two decades.
1999 Detroit Unveil
General Motors pulled the wraps off the Cadillac Evoq on January 10, 1999, in Cobo Hall’s main arena. Built strictly as a show car, the two-seat convertible had a power-retractable hardtop, rear-wheel drive, and proportions that erased any memory of Cadillac’s softer ’90s styling—sharp lines, stacked headlights, and crisp folds replacing rounded, chrome-laden panels.
Design Significance
The Evoq served as the rolling embodiment of Cadillac’s newly announced “Art & Science” philosophy—angular surfaces inspired by aerospace and computers, articulated in vertical light blades and a chiseled body side. Those cues migrated almost unchanged to the 2003 CTS production sedan, making the Evoq more influential than most concept vehicles.
Specifications (Concept Only)
Cadillac quoted compact super-car dimensions—width of 1,834 mm and an ultra-low height of 1,247 mm—yielding a long, wide stance for only two occupants. With a quoted mass of 1,769 kg, the show car was closer to the heft of a production GT than a lightweight prototype.
