Unveiled by General Motors at the 1956 Motorama, the Cadillac Eldorado Brougham Town Car was conceived as a concept-only chauffeur-driven flagship, previewing styling cues that would soon define late-’50s Cadillac luxury.
Concept & Debut
Shown exclusively on the General Motors auto-show circuit, the Town Car featured a stark black-and-chrome body split by a formal rear-roofline blind quarter. Intended purely as a design exercise, it never entered production, yet previewed the pillars and tailfin proportions that would reach showrooms within two model years.
Split-Personality Coachwork
Two unique body styles emerged: an open-topped ‘convertible’ chauffeur’s compartment up front and a fully enclosed rear passenger quarter under a fixed canopy roof. Brightwork was restrained for the era—matte brushed stainless brightened only by slim chrome spears—underscoring the car’s role as Cadillac’s futuristic parade piece.
Legacy
While the Town Car itself remained a one-off, its hard-edged fins and brushed-metal grille elements were lifted almost verbatim for 1957 production Eldorado Brougham sedans. Its very name, Eldorado, became Cadillac’s flagship sub-brand for the next four decades.
